Pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago took an anti-American turn Tuesday.
Video shows protesters wearing keffiyeh scarves while addressing a crowd about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. A speaker called for holding “war criminals” responsible for “their crimes against humanity.”
Another speaker led chants of “free Palestine” and an obscenity against police. An individual dressed in black then set fire to a flag that depicted both the American flag and Israel’s Star of David.
A protester then placed an American flag on top of the smoldering ashes.
“This is what we think of your f—— rag!” a speaker shouted to the cheering crowd. “You are all responsible for the American flag being burned to a char.”
The group then chanted “shut down the DNC” as a drone and helicopter circled above the chaos.
“Globalize the Intifada,” the crowd chanted while blocking a city street. “Intifada, Intifada!”
The scene marked the third day of protests outside the DNC. Pro-Palestinian protests also disrupted a DNC “Women’s Caucus” event on Tuesday. One activist group called for continuing protests throughout the convention, dubbing the display “hell week.”
Former President Donald Trump in July called for jail time for American flag burners following massive anti-Israel protests in Washington, D.C., which coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s congressional address.
“Rarely have we seen anything like this, and I think you should get a one-year jail sentence if you do anything to desecrate the American flag,” Trump said. “Now, people will say, ‘oh, it’s unconstitutional.’”
