Shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally stirs reactions from Maryland officials

The suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead following a shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, according to a local prosecutor. The Secret Service said in a statement that “the former President is safe.”

The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials said.

Officials across Maryland are condemning the assassination attempt that occurred at the former president’s political rally Saturday.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, spoke against political violence in his statement on X.

“Political violence is unacceptable and against what our country stands for,” Moore wrote. “This kind of cowardice must be roundly condemned by all Americans. What happened today to President Trump is abhorrent and should never be tolerated. Ever.

“We are grateful for the swift action of law enforcement as we await more information and pray for former President Trump and his family.

“Our nation is and must be better than this.”

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said in a statement on X that this incident has ignited America.

“We are praying that President Trump and all in attendance are safe,” Hogan wrote. “Political violence must be universally condemned. America is a tinderbox right now. This must stop.”

Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin, a Democrat, called the incident “categorically intolerable” and expressed appreciation for law enforcement’s response.

“Political violence is categorically intolerable in American democracy,” Raskin wrote. “We all hope former President Trump is safe and that no one else was injured. We are grateful for the law enforcement response and hope they get to the bottom of this horrifying attack and how it happened.”

Maryland Congressman Andy Harris, a Republican, shared his prayers of safety for former President Trump and attendees of the rally.

“Praying for the safety of President Trump and the attendees of the Butler, PA rally,” Harris wrote.

Maryland Delegate Adrian Boafo, a Democrat, responded on X and called for those of differing beliefs to come together.

“I unequivocally condemn violence like this. We must come together, and I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being,” Boafo wrote. “We may have different beliefs and support different ideas, but violence like must be condemned by all of us.”

Maryland Delegate Daniel Cox, a Republican, expressed his support for his “friend,” the former president, on X.

“My friend President Donald J. Trump was just shot,” said Cox on X . “Praying for his safety, May the bastards be caught and given no quarter.
